    FDA Seizes Adultrated Pakistani Basmati Rice In NJ
    The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), US have seized of over $80,000.00 worth of basmati rice, imported from Pakistan at POF International, Inc. (POF) located in Irvington, NJ. The seized basmati rice, which had been imported from Pakistan, is adulterated under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act because of insect contamination. Specifically, laboratory analysis of the rice revealed that it contained substantial numbers of weevils, beetles and insect larvae, which rendered it unfit for human consumption.

    Thai Scientists Discover Gene Responsible For Aromatic Rice
    Scientists in Thailand have discovered the gene responsible for making rice aromatic and have now taken out a patent to protect the know-how from rival rice producing nations, including Australia. The team has found that a genetic mutation is responsible for the fragrant aroma of jasmine rice. Of the 50,000 genes in jasmine rice, eight genetic characters do not work.

    Potato production reaches 2919.21 thousand tons
    The potato production has significantly risen and it touched the figures of 2919.21 thousand tons during 2007-08 fiscal year against the set target of 2148.26 thousand tons. Official sources in the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal) told APP here on Sunday that 127.75 thousand hectare of land was set to put under potato crop cultivation to achieve 2148.26 thousand tons of crop for domestic consumption as well as to export.

    Pakistan First Automated Potato Cleaning Plant in Karachi
    Conceding to Russia's terms of importing potatoes from Pakistan, a private sector company has installed the country's first automated potato cleaning plant in Karachi. The locally-assembled plant is estimated to have cost around Rs5 million and has the ability to grade potatoes based on their size.
